The Vatican Guide
The "State of the Vatican City" is the home of the Roman Catholic Church, where the Pope lives. Understandably, the Vatican is one of the most visited places on the planet with millions coming every year.
The Vatican is located across the river Tiber, west of central Rome, walking distance from Campo de' Fiori and Piazza Navona and linked by the three bridges: Ponte Vittorio Emanuele II, Ponte Sant'Angelo and Ponte Principe Amedeo.
The area surrounding the Vatican is a residential area called Prati. The area around Saint Peters Basilica is called the Borgo. It is the oldest part of the Vatican City and, apart from it's architecture, it offers traditional trattorie and outdoor cafes.
In the northern and newer areas, the main shopping street of Cola di Rienza stretches from Piazza Risorgimento all the way to the Tiber River. From the Cola di Rienzo is a broad boulevard with Italy's fashion stores. There is also a daily fresh food market.
If the Vatican is high on your agenda, then this area is a good place to stay as accommodation here tends to be slightly less expensive than other parts of Rome. You can check out our Rome apartment near The Vatican or ask us to find one suitable for your needs and we will email you an address.
